“Those who have ears to hear, listen to these words I now say.
Those who have eyes to see, watch as this story unfolds.”
Today marks Good Friday, a point in the Christian calendar where we remember how the One who flung stars into space and dwelt amongst us fully incarnate; how he allowed the deepest vileness of humanity to take and crucify him on a wooden cross.
The ‘deep magic’, woven into the fabric of this universe and written by the finger of the Divine upon the stone tablets of Moses, awaited full payment. By taking into himself all that was, is, and will be set against the Creator and the Creation, he would give his lifeblood in full and final settlement to the deep magic.
As the Lord and Giver of Life surrendered himself to created beings, all nature stood witness and bowed its head in sorrow; knowing only the deep magic, it could not comprehend what was happening.
The Light of the World was being extinguished, and the Darkness – all that is against the Light – gathered to gloat at its victory.
From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
Matthew 27:45 (NRSV)
With Jesus’ last cry and his lifeblood now seeping into the earth, such power went out shaking the land, rending the earth, and dispelling the Darkness in its shock wave.
Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split.
Matthew 27:50-51 (NRSV)
Now the deep magic was fully satisfied, for its claim upon the Creation had been finally settled with the blood of the Creator.
On this Good Friday, let us focus on what this all means for us in relationship with ourselves, each other, all of Creation and our relationship with the Eternal One. To aid this, why not watch a short (5:39) audio-visual meditation on the One who flung the stars into space, who came down and lived amongst us. At the end there’s a taster of what may lies in store for Part 2 of this mini-series.
However, unknown to the Darkness, a deeper magic was at work as the Creator fell into the very depths of Creation itself… but we have to wait a short time to hear that Song unfold.
