♍ Virgo – The Desire of Nations

Virgo  – The Virgin

✡ Bethulah, the Virgin     Ω Parthenos, the Virgin

sidney_hall_-_uranias_mirror_-_virgoThe sign of Virgo has always been present in the zodiac. In modern zodiacs it is considered the sixth sign, but in the ancient zodiacs (eg the Zodiac of Esne), it is the first sign, the starting point. Across ancient history, many cultures prophesied a virgin woman would give birth to a child of great importance to the history of the world. In the Hebrew / Christian Sacred Text¹, we read of a prophecy from several thousand years ago, “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel, which means ‘God with us’”² The wonder of motherhood attends the Virgin in that Jesus Christ was incarnated through the virgin, Mary. Virgo holds in her right hand a branch and in her left hand a sheaf of wheat, seed (Spica), two images of the Coming One, the historical person, Jesus Christ.

The Branch – In the Sacred Text, two prophecies regarding this Branch are as follows: “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up from David’s line a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land”³ and, “Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD’⁴

The Seed – The Divine Creator revealed the first prophecy of the Seed shortly after the Fall in Eden, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”⁵. See the Scorpio card for more information on this.

The decan constellations of Virgo further reveal the mystery of the Christ:

Coma – The Infant Prince     Shes-Nu, the desired one

comaThis “lost constellation” appears in the more ancient zodiacs of the Persians and Egyptians but is missing from those around ancient Greece. The Zodiac of Dendera shows Coma as a virgin queen sitting on a throne holding her infant son. We show it here as a combination of two more modern constellations, Coma Berenices (Berenice’s Hair) and Canes Venatici (the hunting dogs), both of which were created to fill an apparent “gap” in Grecian star charts. The woman in Virgo and in the Decan of Coma are one and the same; the infant here is identified with the Seed and the Branch also.

Centaurus – The Centaur

CentaurusCentaurs were dual natured creatures, both man and horse. In a similar way, Jesus Christ has a dual nature, being both fully God and fully human. In the Greek fables, Cheiron the centaur had many skills and taught all the heroes of Greece. He was supposed to be immortal, but voluntarily agreed to die, transferring his immortality to Prometheus, after which he was raised to the heavens by Jove (the king of the gods). This is uncannily similar to the account of Jesus who voluntarily gave up his perfect life so that we may gain everlasting life. One portion of the Sacred Text records the words of Jesus, “… I lay down my life, only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord”⁶. Another describes the ascension of Jesus into heaven, “… the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand, with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.”⁷

Boötes – The Coming One

bootesartBoötes appears as a man with a spear in his right hand and sickle in his left. As a decan of Virgo, it can be taken that this harvester is the same man shown in Centaurus and Coma and as such ties in very well with as yet unfulfilled prophecies in the Sacred Text regarding Jesus Christ: “Let all creation rejoice before the LORD, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.”⁸, “Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, ‘Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.’ So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.”⁹

Along our journey so far, we have seen in Virgo and her decans ancient prophecies regarding a God-man, born of a virgin, voluntarily gave up his life in order that we may have everlasting life, and who, after ascending into heaven, is one day coming back to our world to redeem the whole of creation. Our exploration goes deeper with the revelations in Libra…
